St Gregory

St Gregory comes on the first Wednesday after Easter. It start with a procession  from St Gregory church in Zejtun and than all the people goes to relax at Marsaxlokk. They use to play bingo and eat traditional Maltese food. Several people use to swim for the first time before the summer begins.

St.Gregory the Great.

St.Gregory the great, was born at Rome. He died at March 12 year 604. He is a good Pope and teacher. He became the Benedictine Monastery of St.Andrew. Himself assumed the monastar habit in 575. The feast of st Gregory is Celebrated the 1 st wednesday after Easter Sunday. The feast was in momory of Pope Gregory the Great. The procession is very beautiful. The Clergy and the Alter boys wear beautiful costumes. The people after the ceremony go to M`Xlokk to picnic by the sea. On this feast some people have their 1st swim of the season.

St Gregory

St. Gregory was born in Rome around 540. At the age of 34 he was given an important job that of Chief Magistrate of Rome. He built six monasteries in Sicily and in his own home in Rome. He became a priest at the age of 35.

When it was time to elect a new Pope, everyone voted for him He worked a lot as a Pope and he is known above all for setting up Mass as we know it.

He is the patron saint of teachers.

Gregory died on March 12th in the year 604.

Saint Gregory

Saint Gregory the Great was Pope from 3 September 590 until death. Pope Gregory I was the first pope who came from a monastic background. Pope Saint Gregory was born in 540 at Rome, Byzantine Empire to Gordianus and Saint Silvia. His birth name was Gregorius Anicius.  He died on 12 March 604 at the age of 64 at Rome, Byzantine Empire. After death he was canonized. In 1606 he was buried in St Peter’s Basilica.  He is well known for his writings. He was known as the Father of Christian Worship throughout the Middle Ages. In Eastern Orthodoxy, he is also known as St Gregory the Dialogist. He is the patron saint of musicians, singers, students and teachers.

The feast of Saint Gregory is celebrated in Malta on the first Wednesday after Easter. This feast is very popular in Malta. In the morning a procession is led by the Archbishop of Malta, which starts from the church of St Clement in Zejtun, goes around the village and ends up in front of the church of St Catherine. This procession goes back to the year 1543. After the procession and mass people go to Marsaxlokk. There people eat different food, listen to local folk music and play bingo. On this day Maltese people take their first swim. This tradition started in the late 17th century. There were times when the feast of St Gregory was considered very important. In fact it was a custom that a husband on his wedding day promise to take his bride to this feast.
