In 1998 he became the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, and in 2001 a cardinal. Following the resignation of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, on 28 February 2013, the conclave elected Bergoglio, who chose the papal name Franciscus in honour of Saint Francis of Assisi.^[2] He is the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas, and the first from the Southern Hemisphere. Francis is the first non-European pope in 1,282 years, since Syrian^[3][4] St. Gregory III.^[5] Francis speaks Spanish, Latin^{[citation needed]}, Italian,^[6] German,^[7] French,^[6] and English.^[8]

Pope Francis was born on December 17th 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Before he became a Pope, he was first an Archbishop of Buenos Aires since 1998, and then a Cardinal since 2001.

Before becoming Archbishop, he taught literature, philosphy, theology and psycholgy.

In 1958, at the age of 21,he decided to enter the society of Jesus and started studying to become a Jesuit priest.

As the Archbishop of Buenos Aires he turned down the opportunity to live in the palatial Archibishop’s residence, opting for a spartan apartment instead.
